About the blog

This blog contains posts from a previous blog in Spanish, El Balcón Peregrino, and another more recent one in English (can't remember the name), plus some odd additions, including a motley selection of appallingly pretentious poems formerly posted to Usenet newsgroups. I plan to supplement this with newer articles and perhaps salvage a few old newsgroup posts for nostalgia's sake. A few posts have been tagged (EN for English posts, ES for ones in Spanish, plus namedropping tags and subject tags), but most haven't - dunno when I'll have the time, if ever.

Un restaurante, para ganarse clientela, tiene que lucir impecable. Manteles blancos, recién planchados. Flores frescas en la mesa. Cubertería bien lavada, reluciente. El camarero tiene que acercase a la mesa - aunque esté muerto de sueño, de dolor, de rabia - con formalidad y corrección, sonriente, servicial. Todo eso supone trabajo. A veces es bueno indagar en las fuentes de primera mano. Al querer informarme del por qué tanta gente llamaba al Presidente “caretuco”, me tropecé con esto. Se trata de un extracto de una carta escrita por la ex embajadora estadounidense en Ecuador, Linda Jewell, a su reemplazo, Heather Hodges, aconsejándole acerca de los detalles de su misión en este país. (Esta carta estaba entre tantos documentos guardados en esa computadora que se llevó uno de esos yanquis por equivocación hace poco, y que ahora son de dominio público en la web.) The OK Salvadoran

Quicko. There's this dead good story in the Bible somewhere, called "The OK Salvadoran". It's about this bloke who is set upon by Trump supporters, gets mugged and beaten up and is left for dead in a pool of blood and vomit near the entrance to the men's restroom in a shopping mall in Baltimore. Well, after about ten minutes a Nobel prizewinning economist with a recessionary chin and anti-austerity beard comes along, glances at the bloke and makes a mental note to mention him in his weekly syndicated column as an example of the failure of current government policy to stem the rising tide of social unrest. He then disappears into the gents. A few minutes later, a Social Justice Warrior with green hair and gender-fluid eyebrows happens past on the way to the Preferred Pronouns' Toilets, which are next door to the Gents.
